Summer Play Scheme 2009:
Throughout the summer the Online Homework Club has been running a summer play scheme. This has been an event packed with activities and entertainment for children ages 5-11. Some of the activities included were baking, sports, dance and art. We also went on day trips that had a variety of educational and ‘just for fun’. During the 5 week scheme, it has been encouraging to stay with the same group of children and see them growing in their social lives and characters being developed through serving and supporting each other and participating in team games.
This scheme has enabled parents to continue with their work without worrying about childcare, and with the knowledge their children are in safe hands enjoying their summer holiday.
The Summer University is a project which took place over four weeks in the summer. The project was aimed at 11 to 18 years old who took part in the following courses; Vocal Training, Art, Fashion, Contemporary Dance, Drama and Music Production. Additionally a Peer Mentoring Programme was also in operation which proved to be extremely successful.
A group of 12 young people formed a Youth Panel and were involved in the decision making process. They decided on the courses, tutors and content for end of project Showcase.
The Showcase was a great success and involved the students displaying their skills and talents in the following ways; fashion show, drama sketch, art exhibition, dance display, song performance and music recitals. Each student, youth panel member and mentor was awarded certificates. Three youth panel members, a mentor and a mentee were awarded certificates for outstanding achievement.
The project proved that with the right guidance, support and encouragement young people can achieve great things. Along with learning practical skills young people learnt how to negotiate, lead, advise, prepare, plan and overcome fears and obstacles. These young people have learnt coping skills which will help them to succeed in adult life. Click here to read newspaper article
